Final round of the HOLiFOOD Living Lab workshops

On 9 June 2026, the final round of the HOLiFOOD Living Lab workshops took place in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Two workshops were held in parallel, bringing together 43 people in total. LL#1 and LL#3 – “Refining the Future of Food Safety: Evaluation & Exploitation Workshop” The workshop “Refining the Future of Food Safety: Evaluation & Exploitation […]

Holifood influencer campaign

Warmer temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and extreme weather have implications beyond the environment. They also influence food safety risks across the food chain in the EU — from conditions that now favour various foodborne bacteria to the emergence of certain toxins in crops. To mark World Food Safety Day on 7 June, the EU-funded HOLiFOOD […]

Lunch webinar on climate change and emerging food risks in the EU

Climate change is already reshaping what grows where, how food travels, and what risks emerge along the way, often in ways that are hard to see until they become hard to ignore. Join us for a practical conversation with three leading experts who are connecting the dots between climate science, food safety policy, and the […]

Non-linear responses via agglomeration and aggregation of gold nanoparticles for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with chemometric analysis for chlorpyrifos detection

This study, from the Holifood project, investigates the behaviour of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) when exposed to chlorpyrifos, an agricultural pesticide, and its application in detecting the pesticide via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Under synergistic addition of NaCl, AuNPs undergo agglomeration at lower chlorpyrifos concentrations but aggregation at higher concentrations, resulting in a distinctive nonlinear SERS response. A linear relationship is obtained between […]

A sensitive and compact on-site and real time quantitative detection of foodborne and clinical pathogens by on-chip qPCR

This publication proposes and evaluates a comprehensive validation framework for the qPCR detection and quantification of egc-positive S. aureus from food and clinical samples by using a custom microfluidic chip and instrument designed by a commercial partner (miDiagnostics, Leuven, Belgium). The successful validation of this technology offers transformative solutions for on-site rapid pathogen detection and contributes to improved […]

Living Labs: be ready for the next phase

Tiny Guardians Under Threat: How Apps Are Helping to Protect Our Honeybees

Every year on 3 March, the United Nations celebrates World Wildlife Day — a reminder that wildlife is not just about lions and elephants. It is also about the small creatures that keep our world alive: bees. Honeybees are among the most important pollinators on the planet. Without them, much of the food we eat […]

Five new practice abstracts available

These concise summaries capture key insights and early outcomes from our work. This new set of abstracts covers preliminary findings and approaches that are beginning to emerge from our collaborative research. Topics include: CHEFS (CompreHensive European Food […]

Research policies and gender equality

Research policies and gender equality   On 11 February, the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026, we reflect on how women participate in research and innovation, who advances, who drops out, and why. New data from the European Commission show that significant barriers affect career progression and equality in research careers. […]

A message for women and girls in science

Celebrating diverse excellence in science: a message for the international day for women and girls in science The International Day for Women and Girls in Science offers a good occasion to share our message for girls and young women who are considering entering—or choosing to stay in—science. Our message is grounded in experience. We would […]

HOLiFOOD and FoodSafer final event

How can Europe anticipate and manage emerging food safety risks in an increasingly complex food system? From artificial intelligence and satellite data to novel detection methods and holistic risk assessment, the conference will bring together leading scientists, risk assessors, policymakers, industry representatives and young researchers to explore the future of food safety. The final conference […]

Data and models deployed on infrastructure

19th January 2026 This milestone concerns the deployment of data and models from HOLiFOOD’s Work Package 2 on the HOLiFOOD Platform. The HOLiFOOD Platform has been fully configured for the receipt of a wide array of data, from the collection of direct lab results, sampling data over many lab results and model output data. Participants […]

Prototype on chip qPCR tested

19th January 2026 Both the on‑chip qPCR system and the corresponding reader have been developed and fully tested. The prototype consists of a microfluidic silicon–glass chip with an integrated reaction chamber and inlet system, together with a compact instrument equipped with heating and optical modules for temperature cycling and fluorescence detection. The system has been […]
